Made from green yarn a octopus

Create your own pet octopus! It’s the perfect under the sea craft to do with your grandkids and it’s made out of yarn. While making this octopus I got to spend time with my grandkids and once it was finished they had a new friend octopus to play with.

Yarn was braided and tied together to form a octopus

WITH THIS PROJECT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN…

  • What yarn is
  • What the colors green and blue are
  • What an octopus sea creature is
  • How to braid
  • How to tie a knot

MAKING THIS ADORABLE SEA CREATURE WAS SO MUCH FUN! HERE ARE THE MATERIALS I USED:

  • Blue yarn and green yarn
  • 2 googly eyes
  • 3″ or 4″ Styrofoam ball
  • Scissors
  • Fabric and Paper Glue
Blue and green yarn plus a styrofoam ball

First, with the yarn that you want your octopus body in, cut 32 pieces of yarn measuring 36″. The pieces of yarn depends on how thick your yarn is and what size ball you have, so you may need to cut more pieces of yarn around the ball.

Green yarn that has been cut up into a bunch of long strips

Then, holding all the pieces of yarn find the half way point of your yarn pieces and place them over the styrofoam ball just as the photo shows below.  Make sure you can not see any white on the ball and that your yarn is covering all of it.

Next, with your other color yarn, tie a bow TIGHTLY around the bottom of the Styrofoam ball as shown in the photo below.

Blue yarn tied around the green yarn strips

After that you are going to divide the loose yarn strips into eight even sections.

Long yarn strips have been separated to make eight groups for the octopus.

Braid each of the eight sections separately and tie a bow at the end with the other color yarn. Braiding can be hard for young kids so this is a great way to practice. If they struggle with it and are having a hard time then feel free to braid it for them.

Then you are going to trim all of the octopus leg edges making them even.

Trimming all the ends

You are now done your yarn octopus! Your young ones now have their very own sea creature friend.
