using thumbprints to paint a penguin family

Create a beautiful penguin family painting with your little ones. This precious little thumbprint penguin family makes a great piece of art to display in your home each winter! It is a great way to get your grandkids and kids crafting. It makes that much more special when they get to add a penguin for each member of your family. You can even have each member of your family stamp their thumbprint for their penguin to make this craft even more memorable.

Whenever I can, I like to find a book to read to my grandkids that coordinate’s with the craft I’m about to do with them. This helps introduce the art project and gets them settled down before we begin our Arts & Crafts Project together. Here are some books that would go great with this penguin craft.

ENJOY MAKING A CUTE WINTER PENGUIN PAINTING! HERE IS WHAT WE USED TO MAKE IT:

  • paint craft paper or card stock
  • white, black, blue, and orange craft paint
  • basic craft supplies
painting base of penguin background

You are going to start by cutting your paper so that it fits all your penguins. Depending on how big your family is will determine how many thumbprints you will need. That will also determine how long your paper is. My family has 6 people in it, so my paper was cut 4″ X 12″. Then paint the background of the paper blue. Paint snowy hills using white or cream paint. After that paint the child’s thumb white and have them stamp thumbprints on the hills.

painting snow

Take the opposite end of a paintbrush and dip it in white paint to make snowflakes on the blue part of the sky.

Once you have added your snow do the same thing by using the opposite end of the brush and dip it in black paint to make the penguin eyes. For the baby of the family, (the last and littlest thumbprint) I did not give him eyes. With a thin black marker, I gave him to U shaped eyes to make it look like he was sleeping.

Now you want to paint the wings and head black on each penguin.

Last paint the bill and the webbed feet orange. You can leave it as it or add names above or below the penguin or write the family’s surname on the top. Sign and date the back or lower right.

Your thumbprint penguin family is now complete and ready to be frames. Plus you can enjoy keeping it out each winter!
